July 21, 2022 (Savannah, GA) – In light of the current crisis in animal shelters, One Love Animal Rescue and Best Friends Animal Society have joined together for an event created to encourage more people to adopt a pet from July 22-24.

“We are participating in National Adoption Weekend to encourage the adoption of wonderful pets into loving homes nationwide. All rescues are struggling right now in ways we haven’t seen in years. It is tough but we must rise to the challenge, for their sakes,” said Rebecca Wells, Board President.

One Love Animal Rescue is a foster-based rescue. Adoptable pets can be found on their website, oneloveanimalrescue.com. They also have several adoption events planned for the weekend:

Saturday, July 23

  • Pooler PetSmart (262 Pooler Pkwy, Pooler, GA) from 11:00am – 1:00pm
  • Bentley’s Pet Stuff (4501 Habersham St, Savannah, GA) from 11:00am – 2:00pm

Sunday, July 24

  • Starland Yard (2411 De Soto, Savanah, GA) from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

Recent data released by Best Friends showed in 2021 U.S. shelters saw an 8.1 percent increase in animal intakes that pet adoptions couldn’t keep pace with.

As shelters continue to fill up with adoptable pets this summer, often exceeding their capacities, Best Friends and its participating partners have put together the adoption event to address the urgency, with more than 530 shelters, including One Love Animal Rescue.

“Following the immense success of our National Adoption Weekend in May, which resulted in 4,529 lives saved, we couldn’t wait to have a second National Adoption Weekend as soon as possible,” said Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. “The summer months, and July in particular, is one of the highest intake months for animal shelters in America so we really encourage anyone who’s looking for a pet to adopt now.”

One Love Animal Rescue cites many benefits to adopting a pet, including:

  • A One Stop (Adoption) Shop: Most pets that you adopt from a shelter or rescue will come vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered which saves you the time and cost of having to do it yourself, like when you purchase a pet.
  • You Gain a Lifetime Partner in Your Pets Life: Shelters and animal welfare organizations care about your new family member and will be there to help you throughout the life of the pet with helpful resources and information.
  • You are Saving At Least Two Lives: When you adopt you are saving the life of the pet you adopt and opening a spot at a shelter or rescue for a new animal in need of a forever home.

Currently, there are considerably more pets available for adoption than space due to recent problems such as staffing shortages and increased intake numbers.

That’s why One Love Animal Rescue is compelled to be a part of the National Adoption Weekend. “Our local shelters are being forced to make euthanasia decisions due to overcrowding. This is not the fault of the shelter. Owner surrenders and unclaimed lost pets are on the rise, and adoptions are simply down.” said Rebecca Wells. “As a foster-based program, we can only pull dogs and cats from local shelters if we have a foster home available. If you can’t commit to an adoption, we encourage you to consider fostering. One Love provides everything the pet needs, you provide the love and sanctuary.”
